More than 42,000 students are enrolled in magnet programs across Miami-Dade County, and national enrollment in magnet programs is more than double enrollment in charter schools. MAST Academy is perhaps Miami's best magnet school for high school and high school students interested in a strong Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum, with an emphasis on Marine Studies.
MAST is also one of the most competitive magnet programs in Miami for admission. Students in grades 5 through 11 can apply for admission, and high academic performance, as well as evidence of focus and dedication to academic achievement, are considered very important when weighing admission criteria. Located on Virginia Key, between Miami and Key Biscayne, MAST Academy provides high-quality STEM education for gifted students with a strong academic background who are interested in exploring careers in science and technology. Auditions are available for all Miami-Dade County students in grades 8 and 9 to enter the program at the ninth or tenth grade levels. State test scores show that students from the Preparatory Academy for Young Women enjoy higher-than-average math and reading proficiency rates compared to their regular public school counterparts. Research indicates that magnetic curricula are superior to the average public school curriculum in achieving certain student outcomes.
